Canva for School Librarians: Design, Advocate, Inspire

Course Description:In this lively three hour workshop, school librarians will learn how to use Canva to promote reading, raise the profile of the library, and support whole school initiatives such as the National Year of Reading. Canva is a free, powerful design tool that makes it easy to create professional, eye catching materials without any design background. This course shows you how to use it confidently and strategically in a school library context.
Through guided demonstrations you will learn how to:
  • Design posters and displays that promote reading for pleasure and stop pupils in their tracks
  • Use Canva to create professional, attractive newsletters (in advance of Publisher becoming defunct) 
  • Create short videos to spotlight books, reading challenges, author visits, and National Year of Reading events
  • Produce ready to share promotional materials for reading campaigns, library launches, and themed weeks
  • Build interactive quizzes and activities to support reading engagement and library lessons
  • Use Canva’s bulk creation tools for certificates, bookmarks, reading passports, and rewards
  • Create scroll stopping content for school websites and social media to celebrate reading and library impact
  • Build clear, attractive presentations for assemblies, lessons, and staff meetings
  • Produce professional reports and visuals that help senior leaders see the value of the library and reading culture
  • The course focuses on using design as a practical advocacy tool. You will explore how to tell the story of your library, promote reading initiatives, and support National Year of Reading messaging in ways that feel confident, consistent, and achievable within a busy school role.
By the end of the session, you will be confident in creating leave a bank of materials and templates you can adapt all year, and will gain the skills to create your own promotional content whenever you need it. No design experience needed. Just bring your ideas and a willingness to have a go.
